In this tutorial, I will teach you how to build the main drum beat that you hear in a standard techno, dance or electronica song. I am talking about that pumping kick drum and sharp clap combination that keeps us dancing for hours.
Open up your favorite music production software. In this case, I use Acoustica Mixcraft 4 to build my techno drum beat.
Create an instrumental track. I have created a MIDI track, where I will be using a VST to input my drum sounds. The VST I will be using is
Drumatic 3.
First we input the kick drum, also known as the bass drum. It rests on even intervals. Put it on every fourth 16th note throughout the part of the song that you want it. In other words, set your note display to show 16th notes and place a kick drum beat on every fourth interval. Check it out in the picture below:

Now it is time to add the clap. This is simple. Stick a clap on the same beat as every other kick drum. This will give that alternating feel to the beat, since every other time the kick drum hits, it will have a clap to accent the punch. Take a look at the picture below:

Next, we add the hi-hats. These will speed up the beat and really give it a nice flow. There are two types of hi-hats. One is the open hi-hat and one is the closed hi-hat. The open hi-hat sounds best when it is evenly between the beats that we have created above. In other words, the open hi-hat should go on the third 16th note, so that it creates the in-between sound.
The closed hi-hats should be placed anywhere you feel is necessary. I like how it sounds when they are placed back-to-back right before the open hi-hat. See the picture below:

As you can see in the above image, the closed hi-hats are on the same beat as the kick drum and I also added one more on the first 16th note after each kick drum hits. The open hi-hats are the ones that are the highest up on the diagram. As you can see, they are in between each beat.
Now go make some techno beats!
