What Makes For Good Music?

We all have our favorite songs. I'm talking about the ones that bring you back to the place when you first heard them. The ones that make you sing along, dance, and feel a certain way. But what makes these songs sound good to us?

It's all about the mood. The most important aspect of a song is that it must portray a mood or feeling. Every song does this to a certain degree but the best songs really exaggerate it.

When you create a beat or song, make sure that you decide what type of mood you want to make the listener experience. Remember, you are in control of how they will feel when they listen to your song. Do you want to make the person happy? Sad? Excited? The choice is yours. Just make sure that you push it to an extreme degree.

How To Make A Techno Song: Creating The Main Drum Beat

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to build the main drum beat that you hear in a standard techno, dance or electronica song. I am talking about that pumping kick drum and sharp clap combination that keeps us dancing for hours.

Open up your favorite music production software. In this case, I use Acoustica Mixcraft 4 to build my techno drum beat.

Create an instrumental track. I have created a MIDI track, where I will be using a VST to input my drum sounds. The VST I will be using is Drumatic 3.

First we input the kick drum, also known as the bass drum. It rests on even intervals. Put it on every fourth 16th note throughout the part of the song that you want it. In other words, set your note display to show 16th notes and place a kick drum beat on every fourth interval. Check it out in the picture below:

Now it is time to add the clap. This is simple. Stick a clap on the same beat as every other kick drum. This will give that alternating feel to the beat, since every other time the kick drum hits, it will have a clap to accent the punch. Take a look at the picture below:

techno kick and clap
Next, we add the hi-hats. These will speed up the beat and really give it a nice flow. There are two types of hi-hats. One is the open hi-hat and one is the closed hi-hat. The open hi-hat sounds best when it is evenly between the beats that we have created above. In other words, the open hi-hat should go on the third 16th note, so that it creates the in-between sound.

The closed hi-hats should be placed anywhere you feel is necessary. I like how it sounds when they are placed back-to-back right before the open hi-hat. See the picture below:

techno beat
As you can see in the above image, the closed hi-hats are on the same beat as the kick drum and I also added one more on the first 16th note after each kick drum hits. The open hi-hats are the ones that are the highest up on the diagram. As you can see, they are in between each beat.

Now go make some techno beats!

Beat Making Software

The most important thing you will need for making high quality beats is an effective piece of digital music software. There are plenty out there, some expensive and some cheaper. A lot of them have free trial evaluations, so that you can get a feel for the software before purchasing it.

Here is a list of music creation software:

Mixcraft 4
Fruity Loops
Reason 4
Cakewalk
Acid Pro
Cubase

I personally use and recommend Mixcraft 4 because it is cheap and very easy to learn/use. It has all of the necessary components for digital music and beat creation. I will be using Mixcraft on most of my tutorials here on BMS.

Welcome

Welcome to BeatMeSilly.com. This is a brand new blog dedicated to music beats, including hip-hop, R&B, techno, dance, club, electronica and anything else you can think of!

I will be posting all kinds of tutorials, useful website links, inspiring beats and software downloads for you to enjoy.

At this point, you're probably wondering who the hell I am. I really can't say much about myself. I'm just an average guy constantly looking to make a buck. I run a couple of websites, including a custom logo design website.

I have been working with digital music creation for a couple of years now. I'm no professional, but creating music is a hobby of mine. I listen to great beats all day long and I am constantly analyzing new tunes and applying my discoveries to my own creations.

What do I get out of building this blog? Simple. I get the reward of knowing that others are benefiting from my knowledge. Oh yeah, I also will be making some money from the ads and products that I post on this blog. Therefore, you learn new techniques and make new discoveries, while I make a couple bucks in the process. Sounds fair to me.

I will be referring to BeatMeSilly.com as BMS.com or BMS throughout this blog. So, feel free to add BMS to your favorites and check back daily, as I will be adding updates as often as possible.
